It’s World Judo Day!
World Judo Day, celebrated every year on the 28th of October, is a day dedicated to honouring the martial art of Judo and its rich history.
The date was chosen in honour of the founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano, who was born on this day. The day aims to highlight the core values of judo: courage, respect, modesty, friendship, self-control, honour, and politeness.
It’s not just about the physical aspects of the sport, but also the mental and social benefits that come with practising it.
The history of judo is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, dating back to the late 19th century. It has since spread across the world, becoming one of the most popular martial arts, due to its focus on self-improvement, discipline, and respect for others.
World Judo Day serves as a reminder of these principles, promoting the sport’s philosophy and its positive influence on society.
Every year, the International Judo Federation and the judo community celebrate World Judo Day on 28th October. This day represents a lot for all the judo fans around the world as it is the birthday of the founder of judo, Jigoro Kano Shihan.
For each edition a theme is chosen to illustrate the values of judo. This theme is designed to be used as a strong tool to develop the visibility of the sport within and outside of the judo family. In 2024, the theme is: WELLBEING.
On World Judo Day, enthusiasts from all corners of the globe come together to celebrate in various ways.
Some organise special tournaments and demonstrations, while others may host educational workshops or community outreach programmes. These events foster unity among judokas (judo practitioners) and raise awareness about the sport, encouraging more people to embrace Judo’s martial art.
Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or a curious newcomer, World Judo Day offers an opportunity to engage with this martial art, learn about its history, and appreciate its impact on individuals and communities worldwide.
