Individuals shine in mixed weekend for Glamorgan in T20 Blast

It was a mixed weekend for Glamorgan in the T20 Blast over the weekend, as the men’s side won and lost, while the women’s side beat Sussex.
Both Glamorgan men’s and women’s sit in mid-table of both T20 competitions, having won and lost the same number of matches so far in their respective competitions.
On Friday night, captain Kiran Carlson led his side to a dominant victory over Essex, scoring a magnificent 93 in a chase of 184.
Supported by Will Smale with 43, the opening pair set a strong platform with a stand of 91 in nine overs.
Cameos from Ben Kellaway and Chris Cooke took Glammy over the line for a big win. Earlier in the evening, Michael Pepper’s rapid 60 from 30 balls threatened to take the game away from the home side, before he was caught by Carlson off the bowling of Kellaway.
Mason Crane and Dan Douthwaite continued their strong starts to the T20 Blast campaign, with figures of 3-34 and 2-35 respectively.
However, it was Carlson who won the day for Glamorgan, hitting six 6s and five 4s in his knock. The 27-year-old has only hit one T20 100 before and his stroke making – particularly through the offside – deserved a milestone innings.
Unfortunately, Carlson’s side could not build on their victory on Sunday against Sussex. With the hosts batting first at a notoriously batting-friendly ground in Hove, Glamorgan’s bowlers toiled, with only Kellaway and Andy Gorvin surviving unscathed from the damage done by Harrison Ward, James Coles, and Tom Alsop.
With Glammy facing a chase of 196, they needed another good start like Friday night. The visitors collapsed in spectacular fashion, falling from 40-1 to 49-7 as Nathan McAndrew took 5-19 for Sussex.
Asa Tribe and Mason Crane put on 50 for the eighth wicket but it was too little, too late for Glamorgan, who lost by 78 runs. This result leaves them sixth in the T20 Blast south group, with the reverse fixtures with Sussex and Essex coming later this week.
Earlier in the day at Hove, Glamorgan women got back to winning ways in the Vitality Blast Women League 2 South Group, with teenage spinner Poppy Walker taking 4-32 as the visitors won by 5 runs.
Batting first, Glammy posted 133-8, thanks to a pair of 42s from opener Daisy Jeanes, and the experienced Beth Gammon, but looked a little short when England Under-19s captain Abi Norgrove hit 42 off 32 balls for Sussex.
Norgrove was the second of Walker’s four wickets in a game-changing spell at saw the home side reduced to 100-7 from a strong position of 88-3.
Gemma Porter took 2-12 in her four overs as Glamorgan strengthened their position in the closing stages.
It was a fine comeback from Glamorgan after losing their opening match at Middlesex, before they host Middlesex at Colwyn Bay on Sunday, 15 June.
