Harry Beddall: ‘I love the build-up and excitement leading up to a match’

Sam Warburton, Jac Morgan, and Justin Tipuric.

These names are synonymous with the Seven jersey for Wales. No matter the results or era, Wales always have tremendous depth in the back row. Harry Beddall is a rising talent who aims to make his own mark.

“It has been my ultimate dream to play professional rugby ever since I captained Cardiff Schools U11s at the Principality Stadium,” Beddall says.

“I love the build-up and excitement leading up to a match, including the preparation, the nerves and the buzz before kick-off.”

The start

Before he would run out for teams like the Leicester Tigers, Dragons, and Wales U20s, Beddall’s story started at St. Peter’s RFC

Following in the footsteps of players such as Callum Sheedy, Ben Thomas, and Ioan Lloyd, Beddall developed his game playing for the iconic side on Sunday mornings. Talking about his first club, you can tell Beddall that he is proud to have played for St. Peter’s.

“Sunday morning U7s tag rugby down at the Rocks is where my rugby journey began. We were fortunate to have some great coaches who dedicated a tremendous amount of their own time to developing us. We ended up with a superb team, and five of that group have gone on to play international rugby for Wales and England.”

After learning the game in Wales, he went to Hartpury, where his career took its next step.

Hartpury

At the age of 16, Beddall left home and journeyed to Hartpury College. An institution known for nurturing talent. Throughout his time there, he played in the Bucs Super Rugby, the Championship, and the ACE League.

Beddall helped drive his side to Super Bucs glory, his skill and spirit shining so brightly that Leicester Tigers could not look away. The Welshman speaks highly of Hartpury, having had a massive impact on his career.

“Hartpury has played a key role in my rugby education,” Beddall explains.

“Leaving home at 16 was a huge step, but the rugby programme under Wayne Thompson’s leadership at the time, along with the world-class facilities, made it an incredible place to develop.

“I loved the challenge that came with representing Hartpury Rugby. We enjoyed great success, winning the ACE League two years in a row, followed by the BUCS Championship.

“Getting the opportunity to represent Hartpury RFC in the Championship was brilliant for my development. I loved every minute of it and made some lifelong friends.

“Once I completed my BTEC in Sport & Exercise Science, I decided to stay on and complete my degree. I have finished my first two years but have now deferred my final year to focus on the early stages of my Dragons career. Hartpury have been fully supportive of that decision.”

He made his Leicester Tigers debut before destiny called him to Rodney Parade in March. Along the way, his performances for Wales U20s turned heads and hinted at an even brighter future.

Wales U20s

Beddall has made his presence felt in Wales U20s squad, captaining the side. He was a part of a successful Six Nations campaign, which saw Wales achieve big wins against England, Ireland, and Scotland.

His steadfast defence helped Wales secure a victory over Ireland, making a scarcely believable 34 tackles, proving his reputation as a fierce defender. The win against England will remain a lasting memory for Welsh fans.

Wales entered the contest as underdogs, yet under the Friday night lights at the Arms Park, they rose above expectation. It was a night when desire met opportunity, and history felt close enough to touch.

The crowd was loud, emotions were high, and that Welsh set the capital alight. Beddall elaborates on what it meant to play for the side, and that electric night in Cardiff.

“It was a huge honour and privilege to represent my country in two Six Nations campaigns and two World Cups in South Africa and Italy,” he says.

“Being asked to captain my country was a magical experience, with the pinnacle coming on that incredible night at Cardiff Arms Park when we beat England in the Six Nations.

“The atmosphere was unbelievable. We went in as underdogs, but we were a tight group and had a strong feeling during the week’s training that we could get into England’s heads and turn the tables.

“That is precisely what happened. We tackled our socks off, forced England into making uncharacteristic mistakes, scored a couple of cracking tries, and then the Arms Park erupted at the final whistle. That memory will stay with me forever.

“It was the best rugby experience of my life so far.”

Not one to sit on his laurels, Beddall’s attention has turned to making an impact for the Dragons, following his move from Leicester Tigers.

Dragons

When his signing was announced, there was a lot of excitement and a massive get for the Dragons.

Beddall made his debut against the Glasgow Warriors, with his first start coming a week later in a derby against Cardiff. Beddall will look to play a significant role this season at Rodney Parade.

“I was delighted to sign for the Dragons, and I just want to repay the faith they have shown in me,” Beddall adds.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed pre-season training; we have a great group of players with a wealth of experience that I can learn from.”

The Dragons have an exciting squad this year, which will look to improve on seasons past.

“Firstly, to stay fit and healthy, continue to develop and enjoy my rugby,” he finishes.

“Ultimately, I aim to earn a regular starting place with the Dragons and, hopefully, one day, run out at the Principality Stadium representing Wales at the senior level.”

Beddall’s sights are set on the red jersey of Walsd, and few would doubt his ability to get there. His story is far from finished; it’s just the beginning.
