It was nearly a Lockley family double at the Welsh Amateur Championships with Harriet Lockley claiming the Women’s title, while younger sister Ffion was a runner-up in the Valentine Plate competition.

The Men’s title was won by Rhuddlan’s Caolan Burford, the second time he has been Welsh champion, who beat Cardigan’s Bryn Thomas in the final, all the events being held at Prestatyn Golf Club.

Alex James, Royal Lytham and St Anne’s, Shaun Harpin, North Wales, and Lee Jones, Conwy, were tied first in the stroke play with Celtic Manor’s Theo Baker one shot further back in fourth.

Elin Tynan, younger sister of LET pro Ffion, won the Valentine Plate, while Aberdovey’s Isobel Kelly won the Stroke Play, with Harriet Lockley in second.

Emily James, Royal Lytham and St Anne’s and younger sister of Alex, was the runner up to Lockley in the Women’s Final.

“It feel amazing to be the Welsh national champion, it is such an honour,” said Harriet Lockley.

“I have been playing in these events for such a long time it is great to win one of them.

“The golf course was amazing, obviously very dry because of the weather, but they had it in such good condition and the wind was an added bonus.

“It is the Home Internationals next and I am very excited about those, a team event is where we hopefully all come together well and play well for Wales.”

Burford was also delighted to claim a Welsh championship ahead of the Home Internationals.

“It feels great to have won,” he said. “I felt a lot of pressure going out this morning after the lead.

“Tom played incredibly, I knew I had to elevate my game this afternoon and I am just very pleased I was able to do that.

“Prestatyn played really good, firm and fiery but the greens were soft which helped with a bit more control going into greens.

“The strategy I had in place to hit fairways really helped me with control going into the greens. This week has been great preparation for that, especially because it was match play.

“I feel we can go there as a country and compete with everyone else.”

“Congratulations to Harriet and Caolan, two very impressive performances throughout the week,” Wales Golf Competitions Manager Dan Fullager added.

“Emily and Bryn also had excellent weeks getting through to the final and the standards across the board were incredibly high.

“Finally thanks to the staff and volunteers at Prestatyn who did so much to make the event a success, the course was an excellent test for the best amateur golfers in Wales and produced two very worthy champions.”
