Andy Gorvin turned redemption into reality as Glamorgan pulled off an extraordinary two-wicket victory over Worcestershire Rapids off the very last ball of a gripping One-Day Cup clash at Sophia Gardens.

Just three days after his side had fallen agonisingly three runs short against Essex, the Glamorgan skipper once again found himself at the heart of the drama – this time edging Ben Gibbon away to deep third to complete the chase, after Timm van der Gugten’s late assault had hauled the hosts from 225 for 7 to within sight of their 279-run target.

Worcestershire captain Jake Libby had again been the rock at the other end of the day, compiling his fourth century in as many games as the visitors recovered from a shaky start to reach 278 for 9 – a total that looked well beyond Glamorgan until the closing overs turned the match on its head.

Glamorgan had slipped to 46 for 3 in their chase, but Jack Hope-Bell (58) and Callum Nicholls (70) steadied the ship and built a platform for the run chase.

Even so, with 54 needed off the last five overs, another heartbreaking defeat looked the likely outcome – until van der Gugten and Gorvin produced their late heroics.

Earlier in the day, Worcestershire had won the toss and opted to bat, only to slip to 26 for 3 after a superb opening burst from Glamorgan medium-pacer Zain ul-Hassan (4 for 58), who removed the visitors’ top three inside the first ten overs.

Fresh from three straight hundreds, Libby once again proved the architect of his side’s revival, batting with characteristic control and low risk.

Kashif Ali (40) offered early support before Henry Cullen struck a career-best 77 alongside his captain, the pair putting on 153 for the fifth wicket.

Chances were few and far between, but Glamorgan never let the Rapids fully escape, their control summed up by a remarkable 12-over spell between the 24th and 36th overs in which not a single boundary was conceded.

That discipline paid off when Libby, pushing to accelerate having reached three figures, holed out to van der Gugten at mid-on off 19-year-old seamer Tom Edwards, departing for 105 from 114 balls.

His dismissal triggered a collapse of 5 for 29 as Worcestershire closed on 278 for 9.

Glamorgan’s reply got off to a stuttering start at 46 for 3, but Hope-Bell and Nicholls showed real maturity in a fourth-wicket stand of 118 before Hope-Bell fell for a classy 58, caught and bowled by Brett D’Oliveira.

Nicholls followed shortly after for 70, and when Dan Douthwaite departed with the score on 225 for 7, Glamorgan’s hopes appeared to be slipping away.

Van der Gugten then launched a flurry of boundaries to keep the chase alive, but 12 runs were still required when he was caught at deep cover from the final ball of the penultimate over.

This time, though, it was Gorvin who stood firm.

Unbeaten on 25 from 16 balls, he clipped left-armer Gibbon away for four over square leg before scrambling a couple of twos – and with two needed from the final delivery, edged the ball through a vacant third-man region to spark scenes of jubilation and complete a truly remarkable win for the Welsh county.
