Glamorgan win second successive County Championship match

Glamorgan beat Northamptonshire by eight wickets at Sophia Gardens, sealing a second successive County Championship victory on Sunday evening.

This win, coupled with the dominant innings victory against Kent this week, has propelled Glamorgan up the Division Two table. With two losses and two draws in their first four games, Richard Dawson’s side found themselves languishing in second bottom.

Now, they are third, just two points away from the promotion places.

Glammy’s seamers took centre stage on day one in Cardiff, with 3-fers for Asitha Fernando (3-28) and Andy Gorvin (3-36) bundling Northants out for 185.

The home side took their opportunity to build a first innings lead, with scores of 67, 54, and 95 from Sam Northeast, Kiran Carlson, and Ben Kellaway putting Glamorgan into the lead after a top order wobble left them at 48-3.

Some key lower order runs from Timm van der Gugten, who scored 61 from 79 balls, gave Glamorgan a formidable lead of 239.

In the second innings, Glamorgan’s fast bowlers dominated again. With Kellaway’s all-round ability balancing the attack, Dawson is able to select four seamers – a strategy that is paying off in recent weeks.

Fernando again took 3-fer (3-42), with James Harris also in the wickets. A middle order partnership between Saif Zaib and Lewis McManus forced Glamorgan to bat again.

Chasing only 66, veteran seamer Ben Sanderson pegged Glammy back to 6-2 as Zain-ul-Hassan and Marnus Labuschagne fell for single figure scores.

Labuschagne did not make the most of the first of his two matches with Glamorgan, scoring just four runs across two innings as he builds up towards the World Test Championship final with Australia in June.

Asa Tribe and Sam Northeast saw off the remaining runs, giving the Welsh county a close-to-perfect 23 points.

With the table still very congested at the start of the season, wins are vital, and Glammy’s recent form is putting them in promotion contention for the first time in a few seasons.
