Glamorgan went out of the Women’s T20 County Cup in the third round following a heavy defeat to Hampshire Hawks in Newport.

Tier One side Hampshire piled on the runs in the first innings, scoring 201-3 from their 20 overs, before restricting the home side to just 104-9 in reply.

With Glamorgan set to make the step up from the second to first tier of the new English county game in 2027, Hampshire, with England opener Maia Bouchier in the line-up, showed the Welsh county the level that they will be competing at next season.

Bouchier, who missed out on England’s squad for the T20 World Cup, was in imperious form, hitting 63 from 42 balls, including 10 fours and one maximum.

Despite Katy Cobb’s removal of captain Georgia Adams in the powerplay, Bouchier and Abi Norgrove kept the runs flowing with a partnership of 71 from 44 balls.

When Norgrove was run out by Daisy Jeanes on 47, and Bouchier bowled by Sara Phillips, it looked like Glamorgan had a chance to peg the visitors back.

However, Francesca Sweet bludgeoned the Glamorgan death bowling in spectacular fashion, hitting nine fours and two sixes in her knock of 77* from just 35 balls.

Despite the carnage, Phillips finished with excellent figures of 1-26 from her four overs, as Glamorgan set about climbing the mountain.

Glamorgan’s top five were bamboozled by Hawks spinners Bex Tyson (3-25) and Georgia Adams with only Bea Ellis in double figures as they crashed to 26-5.

Gemma Porter and Eve Jackson halted the slide briefly while Porter top-scored with 23 before being run out, the ninth wicket falling in the 16th over.

The last partnership of Poppy Walker – 19* – and Katy Cobb – 10* – batted out the remaining overs to reduce the margin of defeat.

Glamorgan now turn their attention back to the T20 Blast League 2, where they top the points table after five group stage games.
