Fears for career of Wales legend as Fishlock leaves Seattle Reign match on stretcher

Jess Fishlock had to be carried from the pitch on a stretcher after suffering an ankle injury in Seattle Reign’s 3-0 defeat to the Utah Royals.

In the 68th minute, Fishlock left the pitch with an air cast protecting her left leg.

She was struck in the leg by a shot from a teammate and went down in pain.

The Wales legend announced her retirement for the end of season earlier this week, having retired from international duty in October 2025.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Initial X-rays on Jess’ ankle were negative, and she is currently undergoing further evaluation and testing.

“We will share additional updates as more information becomes available.”

In the immediate aftermath of the game, Reign head coach Laura Harvey said: “I don’t think it looked great.”

Harvey said Fishlock’s exit had a negative impact on her side’s efforts.

“When the injury happened, we were really on the front foot and we were really pushing. It sucked the life out of us a little bit… she is a big part of the group obviously for who she is and what she’s done and the leadership role that she plays within our group.”

With Fishlock set to retire at the end of the currently National Women’s Super League (NWSL) season, this injury casts doubt over whether she will be able to go out on her own terms.
