Faletau stays as Cardiff sign two tighthead props

Wales legend Taulupe Faletau has ended speculation over his future by committing to another season at Cardiff, with the region also announcing the signing of two new tighthead props.
Faletau was out of contract at the Cardiff Arms Park later this month and there were rumours that offers for a move to the lucrative Top 14 in France were put to the number eight.
The 34-year-old, who has also played for Dragons and Bath in his 16-year career, has put pen to paper after a series of impressive performances for club and country.
Following an injury-hit last 12 months, Faletau has roared back into form in 2025, winning his place back in the Wales side as well as a stunning man of the match performance for Cardiff against Munster in the United Rugby Championship (URC).
“I’m really happy to be staying with Cardiff and continuing to play my rugby here at home,” Faletau said.
“Being part of this group of players has been amazing. There’s a good vibe on and off the pitch, and I really enjoy working with Jockey [Matt Sherratt]. His insights and support have challenged me to grow and improve.
“Playing at the Arms Park is also truly special and the support we receive is brilliant.
“I’m grateful for the continued opportunity and I’m looking forward to what’s shaping up to be an exciting year ahead.”
Faletau is clearly a big part of head coach Matt Sherratt plans at Cardiff, and his decision to stay is a big boost for the region.
“We are all delighted to be able to keep Taulupe at Cardiff and in Wales,” added Sherratt.
“He is a highly respected member of our squad and he has shown recently the quality he brings to the pitch. He is one of very few players who has real quality in every aspect of the game.
“Taulupe and his family are very settled in Cardiff and this played a big part in him agreeing a new contract.
“He is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to pull on a Cardiff shirt and the red shirt of Wales and we are delighted he is staying with us.”
Sebastian and Wainwright to play at the Arms Park next season
The transfer news does not stop there as Cardiff have also announced the signings of Jevan Sebastian and Sam Wainwright from Edinburgh Rugby and Scarlets respectively.
With current tighthead Rhys Litterick on his way to Edinburgh, Cardiff needed competition for Wales international Keiron Assiratti and Will Davies-King in the number three jersey.
Both props arrive with international experience and are URC-proven players over a number of years.
Sherratt said: “We’re delighted to secure the services of Javan and Sam.
“Javan has gone away from Wales and developed as a person and a player, picking up international experience. He is technically excellent around his set piece and will add to the Cardiff game model with his work in open play.
“Sam will add real depth and competition to the tight head position. He has very good experience for a 27-year-old – playing in the English Premiership at Saracens and the URC with the Scarlets, while gaining international experience.
“He has a real passion for the set piece and a great work ethic that will enable him to add to our game model.
“We look forward to welcoming both players and their families to Cardiff.”
On top of this, Cardiff have extended Rory Jennings’ contract, with the versatile playmaker proving to be a good addition to the club after joining from Newcastle Falcons last summer.
