A pair of half centuries for experienced duo Kiran Carlson and Colin Ingram helped see Glamorgan home against Surrey for a third win of the season.

After a day of hard graft in which the recent champions Surrey managed to extend their third innings lead to 145, bowling all-rounders Tom Lawes and Jordan Clark played nicely in the opening exchanges, extending their last wicket partnership to 105.

Their stand was eventually broken by the departing overseas Ryan Hadley, who’s well-directed short ball saw Clark’s pull top edged to wicketkeeper Chris Cooke.

With 49 added overnight, Surrey had something to bowl at. Despite the pitch’s dryness and improved condition, a comeback effort to 447 from 105 all out in the first innings was creditable.

Chasing 195 – often a tricking score on a dry pitch – Glamorgan started in nervy fashion, with Billy Root, in his first game of the season, run out in the first over.

Root was struck on the pad and took an unadvised run and, with both players at the non-striker’s end, wicketkeeper Ollie Pope had an unnecessary shy, only for the backing up Dom Sibley to mop up with the Glamorgan man making no attempt to get home.

Out strode captain Kiran Carlson to settle the nerves, and his stand of 71 certainly easing a few dressing room jitters.

Asa Tribe enjoyed anything on his pads until he was caught feeling for one outside off stump against leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, introduced after just eight overs on the wearing surface.

The damage was done with Chahar conceding 23 in two overs, getting swept – in orthodox and reverse – regularly by the new batter Ingram, and pulled into the stands when he dropped short.

The Indian oversea hit back by bowling Carlson for a well-made 67 around his legs from around the wicket for a consolation.

Sean Dickson joined Ingram at the crease and helped the veteran knock off the remaining 64 runs, with Ingram finishing on a rapid 61 from 64 balls.

Having picked up 22 points from the victory, Glamorgan move up to fourth in the County Championship table, just nine points off top side Nottinghamshire, and a whopping 35 above the relegation zone.
