Dewi Lake exclusive part three: European silverware and championship finals would be “a nice way to finish off” Ospreys career

In his final season with the Ospreys, Captain Dewi Lake has been able to reflect on what he wants to achieve with his boyhood club before he moves on to the next chapter of his regional rugby career.

As ambitious as a club and national team Captain should be, Lake wants to lead his Ospreys to trophies before departing for Gloucester.

On the Sportin Wales Podcast, he told co-hosts Alex Cuthbert and Dillon Lewis:

“We have spoken about a chance at some silverware now in Europe. Like [we] have two more games to get through the group and then into the round of 16, so that would be a nice way to finish off.

I think we’ve gone well in that competition before, we got to the quarters, but hopefully we can go a step further and get to the final

We know some good teams we’re going to have to beat to get that far but it’s a good competition.”

It’s not just European success Lake is aiming for in his final season, he also sees a path forward for the Ospreys in the United Rugby Championship as well.

“URC wise, we need to pick some points up over this Christmas period really and slingshot ourselves into that top eight.

We’ve been in that top eight and bowed out in the first quarter final so it’d be nice to get back into that top eight and give a real push for that as well.”

Lake and the Ospreys have been successful so far since, beating the Scarlets in their Boxing Day derby.

Lake showed excitement for this fixture and the Christmas period when previewing it:

“It’s hell of a day, Boxing Day derbies, [Scarlets] are hitting a bit of form now which is good to see for Welsh Rugby.

[Scarlets V Ospreys] used to be full all the time on Boxing Day, there wouldn’t be an empty seat there.”

Since tickets were sold out and both teams achieved a bonus point in the game, it makes sense why Lake enjoys such an occasion.

The Ospreys take on Cardiff Rugby next at Brewery Field on New Year’s Day in Round 9 of the URC.
