Day And Jones Keep Welsh Hopes Alive
Wales’ Ryan Day and Jak Jones are keeping the Welsh fires alive at Snooker’s World Championships after they both advanced to the second round.
Both beat seeded players in the first round in what has already been a tournament of shocks.
Day beat 15th seed Barry Hawkins 10-8, while Jak Jones defeated 11th seed Zhang Anda 10-4.
Jones reached the quarter finals of the world championships last year and will be hoping to do the same as he faces unseeded Si Jiahui.
China’s Si defeated Jones’ compatriot and sixth seed Mark Williams 10-9 with a final frame break of 77.
After the match Williams tipped 21-year-old Si as a future world champion whilst also hinting he may not return to the crucible now aged 50.
Jones’ match against Si starts on Friday as one of two second round ties without any seeds.
In total, half of the 16 seeds were knocked out in the first round including reigning world champion Luca Brecel, who lost 10-9 to Englishman David Gilbert, and four-time world champion Mark Selby, who lost to fellow countryman Joe O’Connor, 10-6.
One seed who didn’t have any problems in reaching the second round was seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan.
‘The Rocket’ is bidding to become the first man to eight world titles and go one better than the record he currently shares with Scotland’s Stephen Hendry.
O’Sullivan was in bristling form as he defeated Wales’ Jackson Page 10-1 to set up a second-round match against Day which starts on Sunday.
In total, there had been six Welshmen in the draw including Jamie Jones and Dominic Dale.
Dale, 52, was the oldest player in the main draw but lost to 12th seed Kyren Wilson 10-1, whilst Jamie Jones was defeated 10-6 by four-time world champion John Higgins.
So far in the second round Gilbert has taken a 5-3 lead over 16th seed Robert Milkins whilst 2019 champion Judd Trump leads compatriot and 14th seed Tom Ford six frames to two.
