Clayton back on top after glory over Van Gerwen in Brighton
Jonny Clayton completed a brilliant comeback against Michael Van Gerwen to ascend back to the top of the Premier League darts table on night 10 of the PDC Darts Premier League.
Clayton overtook Littler by three points in the table as ‘The Nuke’ was beaten in the opening match by Stephen Bunting, recording his lowest darting average in a televised PDC match.
Bunting was then beaten by Van Gerwen in the following game sending the three-time World Champion into the final where he faced ‘The Ferret’ on the oche.
Clayton had a tough route to glory in Brighton and didn’t go untested, as he needed a last leg decider to see off Humphries in his opening match, finishing clinically with a bullseye.
The Llanelli man managed to keep Josh Rock off his heels in the semi-finals with a 6-4 win, averaging 50% on the doubles, a superior percentage to Rock’s 28%.
It seemed as though MVG was to win his second night of Premier League darts and equal that of his fellow finalist and Gerwyn Price in the campaign as he surged to a 5-2 lead in the final.
Clayton was now required to win four legs in a row after conceding such a deficit, but he was up to the task and produced a stunning comeback to hold off Van Gerwen and win his third night in the Premier League to head to the top of the table once again.
The Ferret found a home for his signature double 16’s late on, using them to his advantage to win his fourth leg before hitting a bullseye finish to make it 5-5.
He reverted back to his favourite double in the deciding leg to complete the comeback and win his 14th match of the campaign, three more than Littler or Price.
Heading into night 11, it is tight in the top four with only five points separating first place Clayton and his fellow Welshman, Price, in third place. Luke Littler sits in-between the pair and will be looking for a better outing next week in Rotterdam.
Fourth place Van Gerwen sits only three points behind Price, while the bottom four of Gian Van Veen, Luke Humphries, Stephen Bunting, and Josh Rock will be looking to disturb proceedings before Finals Night.
After his win, Clayton said: “I thought the game was over at 5-2 up for Michael. He missed, he gave me a chance. You’ve got to take chances. That last leg was probably my best of the game. I’m back on top of the table, Luke Littler can start chasing me again.
“It feels great to be honest. I know what it’s like to be here, I’ve got the experience, I know what you need to get to finals night. Take your chances, play decent, you’ve got a good chance.
“I love a bullseye. At the end of the day, I don’t mind the bullseye. Sometimes they go, sometimes they don’t. Those two legs, they went.”
