Cardiff City wait on Nathan Jones as new manager set to be named this week

Cardiff City are hoping to announce their new manager this week, with Charlton Athletic manager and Bluebirds fan Nathan Jones still in contention.

With the sacking of Omer Riza before the end of their relegation season, and the increasing likelihood of Aaron Ramsey moving on from the club after his three-game spell as caretaker, Cardiff are on the lookout for a manager to lift them out of League One.

Shortly after the end of the Championship season, the club formed a sub-committee to compile a shortlist of six names which were then interviewed by Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman and chief executive Ken Choo.

Dalman and Choo have now presented their recommendations to owner Vincent Tan, who will have the final say on who will be in the dugout at the Cardiff City Stadium next season.

Sportin Wales understands that current Charlton boss Nathan Jones is still in contention for the job, despite his recent promotion with the Addicks to the Championship via the play-offs.

Jones is from Cardiff and has spoken often about his affection for the club and his desire to manage the Bluebirds at some point in his career. Now could be the perfect opportunity for the EFL specialist.

The work that he has done at Charlton and Luton Town before marks him out as an ideal candidate to lift Cardiff out the club’s malaise.

The other candidates include Des Buckingham and Ian Evatt, former bosses of Oxford United and Bolton Wanderers respectively, who have both been interviewed.

Ramsey himself has held talks with Cardiff about a return, but asserted his desire to continue his playing career until the 2026 World Cup. Ruben Selles, recently sacked by Hull City is another under consideration, as is Leicester City assistant coach Brian Barry-Murphy.
