Bethan Lewis to captain Wales against England as Williams ruled out

Bethan Lewis is set to captain Wales against England at Ashton Gate on Saturday as Kate Williams is ruled out through injury.
Williams has suffered a leg injury but the extent of her absence has not been confirmed. The Gloucester-Hartpury flanker captained Wales in their first two matches of the 2026 Six Nations against Scotland and France.
In Williams’ absence, her club teammate Lewis will take the captaincy on as they travel to Bristol for their first away trip of this year’s campaign.
This is not the first blow to Wales’ captaincy group, with co-captain Alex Callender ruled out of the Six Nations prior to the tournament due to an ankle injury ruling her out for 12 weeks.
Wales have suffered a few key injury blows during this campaign so far, as fullback and Williams’ Gloucester teammate Nel Metcalfe is also missing the campaign due to a knee injury, set to keep her out of action for three months.
Lewis has captained Wales before, most recently at the 2025 World Cup when Callender and Williams missed the 42-0 defeat to Canada in the Pool Stage.
“It’s always a massive honour to put on the jersey and to be able to lead the girls out against England,” Lewis said.
Wales centre Carys Cox, who was a late withdrawal from the France defeat after taking a knock in training, will also miss the England clash, but head coach Sean Lynn says wing Seren Singleton is fit despite leaving the Arms Park field with her arm in a sling.
“Carys isn’t going to be in contention this week, however she will be when we go up against Ireland and Italy,” said Lynn.
“Seren has been in training [on Wednesday] and has been training really well, so that’s a positive for us.”
“We have absolutely nothing to lose,” added Lewis.
“I think we’ve shown a lot of progress in terms of performance. Obviously it’s not the complete performance that we’re working towards, but what better team to go up against than England to really put our stall out?
“We’ve had a good look at ourselves, taking some learnings from last week, and hopefully we can kick on again this week.”
The Wales side to face England will be named on Thursday morning.
