Bale leads consortium in failed Cardiff City bid

Former Wales and Real Madrid legend Gareth Bale was reportedly part of a consortium that had a bid to buy Cardiff City turned down in May.

Bale, 35, despite never playing for the Bluebirds, is from Cardiff and attended Whitchurch High School.

The former Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Real Madrid winger retired from professional football in January 2023 and is understood to have been part of a consortium that sent a notice of intent to Cardiff owner Vincent Tan to buy a controlling stake in the club.

It has been reported that the offer was rejected ‘before the boardroom stage’ by Tan, who is thought to have little interest in selling Cardiff at this time.

It is likely that the group try again with another offer sent to the Malaysian businessman.

Cardiff have been contacted for comment and have declined to speak on the reports that surfaced on Friday evening.

Bale was linked with a move to his hometown club in the summer of 2022, ahead of that year’s World Cup, before choosing instead to join Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.

It was also reported that the Bale-lead consortium attempted to take over Plymouth Argyle earlier this month, to no avail.
