All to play for as Wrexham reach final day in play-off push

Wrexham seasons have certainly been more emphatic than this one, but not many will prove to be more dramatic than this one could be.

Their campaign comes to an end on Saturday, in what will prove to be a pulsating final day in the English Football League.

Wrexham’s run of three successive promotions – and the attempt to make it a remarkable fourth – is in serious jeopardy after a 3-1 defeat at champions Coventry City.

Wrexham vs Hull (vs Derby) for the final spot

Hull City losing to Charlton on the Saturday afternoon, it opened up a real opportunity for Phil Parkinson’s side to all-but confirm their spot in the play-offs.

However, standing in their way on Sunday were Championship winners Coventry City, who were celebrating their own success in their final home game at the CBS Arena.

That 3-1 defeat, including a damaging late third from Ephron Mason-Clark, sees Wrexham level on points but only added by a single goal on goal difference.

Both Wrexham and Hull have relatively difficult matches on the final day, with the Welsh side welcoming Middlesbrough to the Cae Ras and Hull hosting the resurgent Norwich.

Middlesbrough are still in with a chance of getting the final automatic promotion place, as long as Ipswich Town slip up in their game in hand with Southampton on Tuesday evening.

“A few weeks ago we were four points adrift and the aim was to go right to the wire in the battle to get into the play-offs,” said Parkinson.

“With over 45 games gone, we’ve achieved that. We’re all set for next week.”

Ultimately, Wrexham will finish sixth if they better Hull’s result and better or match Derby’s result.

If they match Hull’s result it will go down to goal difference, with Wrexham’s currently one better. If goal difference is level, goals scored will be the deciding factor, which at the moment, Hull have the advantage by a solitary goal.
