Abigail Roper claimed a bronze in the women’s vault final, just pipping her identical twin sister Emily to a Commonwealth Games medal, before Emily took bronze in the uneven bars later in the afternoon.

The identical twins scored 13.433 and 13.283 to give Wales a 3th and 4th place finish behind the Canadian and English gold and silver medallists, respectively.

Just hours later, Emily came third in the uneven bars, with fellow Team Wales gymnast Jemima Taylor placing seventh.

Abigail Roper’s bronze ends a 32-year wait for a Welsh medal in the women’s vault, and was Team Wales’ first medal in gymnastics following near misses in the all-round and team events over the weekend.

“I can’t even put into words how crazy it is,” said Abigail.

“I went into this final with no expectations, it was my first final at a major tournament and I was just happy to make it.

“To come away with a bronze medal is just insane.”

Abigail admitted she felt for her sister, who had a further chance to win a medal in the uneven bars later on Monday.

“I want to be happy for myself but then at the same time like I feel bad for her,” Abigail said.

“Fourth is not the best after coming fourth in the team final, we found that hard.

“She’s got the bars final now, so she just needs to keep her head focused and hopefully she’ll do a really good job.”

Emily did just that, performing a stellar routine to come third behind Australia’s Kate McDonald winning gold and Canada’s Ellie Black picking up silver.

“I’m just really glad that I just managed to deliver the best routine of my life, really,” Emily Roper said.

“Obviously disappointing coming from the vault, finishing fourth, but I think I managed to bounce back, lock in, and I just knew what I could do and delivered it.

“I think we [as sisters] are very competitive, and obviously seeing her get a medal, I was a bit disappointed, but also very proud of her for doing that because she’s worked so hard on vault, and that’s like her thing.

“So I was like, she can have her moment, but I knew that bars; I’m capable.

“I knew that I was capable of delivering a good routine and challenging these amazing girls. So yeah, really happy.”
