English golfer Ella Butteriss shot a course record at Aberdovey in West Wales and then maintained her form to win the Welsh Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship.

Her first round included seven birdies and two eagles in an eleven under 64, a record off the gold course tees, before two more impressive rounds of 70, five under par, took her to the title, two shots clear of England squad player Lily Hurst.

The top Welsh player was Pennard’s Rebecca Del Sol-Gonzalez tied in sixth place, with Buckinghamshire’s Saskia Owen tied ninth, Morgan Bollan, Crewe, tied fourteenth, and Tenby’s Bethan Morris tied seventeenth, to complete the four Welsh players in the top 20.

“It has been an incredible week, I have loved every second of it. Going out with a bang and shooting the eleven under was lovely and then trying to focus on ending the week with the trophy,” said Butteriss.

“I have achieved it so it has been a great, great week. Aberdovey was amazing, it is my favourite course in Wales, the green staff have done an amazing job and the members and staff could not have been nicer.

“I am not usually a massive fan of links golf, but the wind stayed calm for us, the weather has been amazing, and the golf course is just great.

“It is my first win of the season, it would be nice to find some momentum from this, so I am playing a lot this summer and it would be nice to play as well as I can.

“Dad was on the bag all week, he was amazing, it is super special to get to share moments like this with him. We have had a blast, a few laughs, a few strange calls, but it makes me laugh and I could not have done it without him.”

“It was an outstanding round of golf by Ella on the first day and a scorecard which has already been put up in the Aberdovey clubhouse,” Wales Golf Competitions Manager Dan Fullager added.

“That set her on her way to the win, but there were plenty of players who were chasing her down as we witnessed a really high standard of golf.

“Aberdovey was a superb venue, the weather was kind which led to a lot more birdies and eagles than we normally see around there.

“The volunteers and staff did an excellent job in helping us to make this event such a success.”

After the Welsh Women’s Open Seniors Championship in Rhuddlan this week, Newport will host the Welsh Open Youths Championship at the end of the month.
