Aaron Ramsey closes curtain on stellar football career
One of the most important players to put on a Welsh shirt in the 21st century, Aaron Ramsey, has today announced his retirement from professional football.
The midfielder earned 86 caps for his country, scoring 21 goals and competing as an integral player for Wales in their last three major tournaments.
‘Rambo’ was a key component of a golden generation for Welsh football, cementing himself as a creative playmaker in the team, possessing great positioning and ball control.
He ran the show in the EURO 2016 quarter-finals against Belgium that sent Cymru to the semi-finals for the first time in their history, and was a standout player through the campaign .
Ramsey made history again with his national team six years later, as his performances helped Wales qualify for the World Cup for the first time in over 60 years.
Besides his international feats, Ramsey enjoyed a successful club career, winning 9 trophies across multiple leagues. His move from Cardiff city to Arsenal as a teenager propelled his career, as he went on to win 3 FA cups with the Gunners.
In his retirement message, Ramsey wrote: “After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football.
“Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it.
“To the Red Wall. You have been there through thick and thin
“You have been an essential and indispensable part of our success.
“We have been through everything together and it’s been an honour to represent you.”
He also gave credit to all of his clubs and their managers that he played under at the highest level, as well as his wife and family for making his career possible.
Best of luck to Rambo in his retirement and with future endeavours!
